Staff and other members of the Smithsonian community are invited to an open house Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Anacostia Community Museum featuring a tour of “Exercise Your Mynd: Bk Adams I AM ART.” This exhibition explores the imagination and creativity of artist BK Adams, who created most of the paintings and sculpture in his studio in historic Anacostia. The artist himself will be on hand to lead the tour.
BK Adams is a local self-taught artist determined to challenge and encourage people—young and old, male and female, conformist and nonconformist—to expand their visual and spiritual horizons, to find the creative expression inside them, and to create their own strong identities in a world that is often confusing, intimidating and overwhelming.
This exhibition is the first of a three-part exhibition series and documentation project called Call & Response: Community and Creativity. Call and Response is an Anacostia Community Museum arts initiative that explores themes of creativity, identity and community. The exhibition series highlights the give-and-take of artistic endeavor and the connections existing between members of urban communities as expressed through arts and creativity.
Participants will also enjoy a curator’s talk on upcoming exhibitions, learn more about the Museum Academy Program and receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum that will include a visit to our collections area, archives, and library.
A shuttle bus will depart from the Castle, 1000 Jefferson Drive, SW, Mall side, between the Castle and the Arts & Industries Building.
